  1. Ground ball to short. Everyone moves on contact.

  3. Force at second. Turn and fire to first.
  4. Two outs. Right field backed up the throw the whole way.

  • C
    CatcherBack it up

Trail the batter-runner up the line toward first in case the throw goes past the first baseman.

  • 1B
    First baseCover it

Straddle second, take the feed, touch the bag, and clear the runner as you throw to first.

  • 3B
    Third baseCover it

  • SS
    ShortstopGet it

  • CF

Bunt Down with a Runner Aboard

Runner on 1st · 0 out

  2. Pitcher calls it and fields the ball clean.
  3. Sure out at first. Do not chase the lead runner.
  4. One out, runner in scoring position — that is the trade you accept.
  • P

Break off the mound under control, call the ball loud if it is yours, and field it with two hands facing first.

  • C

You see the whole field — call who takes it and which base the throw goes to. Loudest voice on the play.

  • 1B

  3. Throw to first.
  4. One out — and the base the fielder abandoned was covered the whole time.

Wheel Play — Runners on 1st and 2nd

Runners on 1st & 2nd · 0 out

  1. Bunt is down. The wheel turns — third baseman crashes, shortstop rotates to third.
  2. Third baseman fields it looking at third — the lead runner is the prize.
  3. Throw to third for the lead out — but only if it is clean.
  4. Lead runner erased. If it is not there, take the sure out at first — never force the wheel.
  • P
    PitcherBack it up

Anything up the middle is yours. Field it and check third first — if the lead out is not there, take the sure one at first.

  • C
    CatcherBack it up

Anything dying in front of the plate is yours, and you run the whole play with your voice — call the base out loud before anybody picks the ball up.

  • 1B
    First baseBack it up

Crash the line hard. On a wheel play both corners charge, and the bases behind you get filled by somebody else.

  • 2B

Sprint to cover first. Both corners are charging, so that bag is yours and nobody else is close.

  • 3B

  • CF

Squeeze Bunt — Runner on Third

Runner on 3rd · 1 out

  1. Runner breaks from third with the pitch. The bunt goes down.
  2. Charge it and get it bare-handed — there is no time to field it cleanly and stand up.
  3. Flip it home. Underhand, firm, chest high.
  4. Bang-bang at the plate. This play is decided by how fast you get to the ball, not how hard you throw.
  • P
    PitcherGet it

Come off the mound the instant you see the bunt turn. Bare hand it if you must and flip it home — the runner left on the pitch, so you have no time.

  • C
    CatcherCover it

Get out from behind the plate for anything you can reach, then get back and cover home. If the pitcher takes it, your only job is to be a target and hold on.

  • 1B
    First baseBack it up

Crash hard. On a squeeze everybody charges — hesitation is what makes this play work for the offense.

  • 2B
    Second baseCover it

Cover first. Both corners are gone and the batter-runner still has to be accounted for.

  • 3B
    Third baseGet it

Crash the line. Take anything down the third-base side and throw home without straightening up.

  • SS
    ShortstopCover it

Cover second and stay alert — if the throw home gets away, the batter-runner is going to keep running.

  • LF
    Left fieldBack it up

  • CF

Cutoffs & Relays

7

Base Hit to Left, Runner Trying to Score

Runner on 2nd · 1 out

  1. Line drive lands in left. The runner is going on contact.
  2. Left fielder charges through the ball. Third baseman lines up as the cutoff.
  3. Throw through the cutoff man, chest high.
  4. Cut or let it through — the catcher makes the call.
  5. Play at the plate — and the batter-runner stopped at first because the throw went home.
  • P
    PitcherBack it up

Get behind the plate, in line with the throw, and stay in foul ground. If it gets past the catcher you are the reason the runner behind him does not score too.

  • C
    CatcherGet it

Guard the plate, give the fielder a target, and make the call — "cut home" or "let it go" — loud enough for the cutoff man to hear.

  • 1B
    First baseCover it

Cover first — the batter-runner is rounding and will take second if you leave the bag empty.

  • 2B
    Second baseCover it

Cover second base. That batter-runner is the tying or winning run later; do not give him a free base.

  • 3B
    Third baseCut it

  • SS

Cover third behind the runner in case he holds up or the play comes back to the bag.

  • LF

  • CF
    Center fieldBack it up

Sprint over and back up the left fielder. If he bobbles it, you are the reason it does not become a triple.

  • RF
    Right fieldBack it up

Drift in behind second base — every throw across the infield needs somebody behind it.

Pop-ups & Priority

13

Infield Pop-Up — Who Calls It

Bases empty · 1 out

  1. Ball goes straight up over the infield. Everybody looks for it.
  2. Shortstop calls it — three times, loud. Everyone else clears out.
  3. Caught. The pitcher and catcher got out of the way, which is their job.
  • P
    PitcherBack it up

Get out of the way. Your only job is to clear the area and point at the ball — never fight an infielder for a pop-up.

Caught Off Third — Running the Pickle

Runner on 3rd · 1 out

  1. Runner is hung up off third. Catcher has the ball and runs at him.
  2. Catcher sprints him hard back toward third — never toward home.
  3. One throw, ahead of the runner, to the third baseman on the bag.
  4. Tag. One throw, no circus — and the pitcher already filled in behind the plate.
  • P

Rundown Between Second and Third

Runner caught between bases · 1 out

  1. Runner is hung up. The nearest fielder takes the ball and runs at him.
  2. Run him hard back toward the base he came from. Full speed, ball up.
  3. One throw, ahead of the runner, to the man on the bag.
  4. Tag. One throw, no circus — and every base still had somebody standing on it.
  • P
    PitcherBack it up

Fill in behind one end of the rundown. Rundowns fall apart when a base ends up empty — you are the spare body.

  • C

Corners Occupied — Hold the Ball

Runners on 1st & 3rd · 1 out

  1. Runner on first breaks with the pitch. The runner on third shortens up, waiting for you to throw.
  2. Catcher comes up throwing-ready — and looks the runner on third back.
  3. Hold it. No throw. The runner on third has to go back.
  4. They got second base. You kept the run off the board. That is a trade you take every time.
  • P
    PitcherBack it up

Stay in front of the mound as an outlet. If your catcher wants to hand it off or snap one to third, you are the middle man — but nobody is throwing to second here.

  • C
    CatcherGet it

Catch it, come up ready, and look the runner on third all the way back. Then hold the ball. Throwing to second is exactly what the offense wants — a base is cheap, a run is not.

  • 1B
    First baseCover it

Cover first in case the runner stops halfway and tries to get back.

  • 2B
    Second baseCover it

Cover second and give a target — but expect no throw. Your job is to be there if the catcher sees something free.

  • 3B
    Third baseCover it

Stay on your bag with a target up. The runner at third is the entire reason this play exists — he is your responsibility.

Corners Occupied — The Cut Play

Runners on 1st & 3rd · 1 out

  1. Runner on first breaks. The shortstop cuts in front of second instead of covering it.
  2. Catcher throws to the cut man — short of the bag, chest high.
  3. The cut man reads the runner at third. He broke — so the ball goes home, not to the tag.
  4. Out at the plate. The cut is what gives you that choice — a throw to the bag would have been too late.
  • P

Cut toward the plate side and back up your catcher. This play can come home in a hurry.

  • C

Ground Ball to 3B — Bases Loaded

Bases loaded · 1 out

  1. Ground ball with the infield in. All four runners are forced.
  2. Throw home. Erase the run first, always.
  3. Force at the plate — then step inside the line and fire to first.
  4. Two outs, no runs. Best possible result on a loaded-bases grounder.
  • P

Ball Gets Away with a Runner on Third

Runner on 3rd · 1 out

  1. Ball skips past the catcher. The runner breaks for home immediately.
  2. Catcher finds it fast; pitcher is already covering the plate.
  3. Flip it — underhand, firm, chest high. No fancy throws from your knees.
  4. Tag at the plate. This play is won by two players starting to run at the same instant.
  • P
    PitcherCover it

Sprint to the plate the instant the ball hits the dirt. Straddle the front edge, give the catcher a target, and hold on. This is your out to make.

  • C
    CatcherGet it

Rip the mask off, find the ball, and get to it under control. Then flip it firmly to the pitcher — the throw is short, so do not fire it.

  • 1B
    First baseCover it

Cover first and stay there. Wild pitches make everybody run around; somebody has to hold the bases.

  • 2B
    Second baseCover it

Cover second base. If the runner from third gets caught in between, this becomes a rundown fast.

  • 3B
    Third baseCover it

Get to third and give a target in case the runner retreats instead of committing.

  • SS
    ShortstopCover it

Cover third. If the runner reads it late and dives back, you need to be standing on that bag with the ball coming.

  • LF
    Left fieldBack it up

Break in toward third. If a throw goes wild during the scramble, you are the safety net.

  • CF

Dropped Third Strike

Bases empty · 2 out

  1. Strike three in the dirt. The batter takes off — with two outs he can always run.
  2. Catcher finds it and steps to the INSIDE of the baseline — never throw through the runner.
  3. Throw to first to end the inning.
  4. Inning over — on a strikeout that was almost a baserunner.
  • P
    PitcherBack it up

Come off the mound toward the first-base line and back up the throw. This throw is rushed more often than any other.

  • C
    CatcherGet it

Find the ball, then move to the inside of the baseline before you throw — a throw that hits the runner in the back is a free base.

  • 1B
    First baseCover it

Get to the bag fast and give a clear target. The catcher is throwing on the run and needs something obvious to aim at.

  • 2B

  • 3B
    Third baseCover it

Hold third. It is empty, and an empty base is exactly where a hustling runner ends up.

  • SS

Pickoffs

Pickoff at First

Runner on 1st · 0 out

  1. Pitcher comes set. The runner leans just a little too far.
  2. Spin and throw — knee high, on the bag side.
  3. Low tag, straight down. The runner is diving back and the tag has to already be there.
  4. Out — and even here, right field was moving behind the bag the whole time.
  • P

  • C
